#21 BASIC HOME REPAIR & IMPROVEMENT
SKILLS

This is a great place to start learning practical maintenance skills
that can be used throughout life! Learn simple home repairs from the
pros in our course designed for beginning handypersons. We cover window
and door repair, changing locks, electrical connections, toilet, sink,
and faucet installation and repair, drywall patching and repair, tool
usage and safety.

#23 CARPENTRY BASICS FOR EVERYONE
Instructor: Donna Mori
An introduction to basic carpentry tools and skills for people with
little or no pre-vious hands-on experience. After a morn-ing lecture
and demonstration, you will build your own sawhorse (materials
included with class fee). Students are asked to bring their own hand tools.

#24 WALLPAPER HANGING
Instructor: Donald Foreman
A veteran in the trade takes you through all the steps
necessary for the most dramatic and economical way to completely
transform a space - wallcovering! Learn planning, wall preparation,
tools, materials and installation techniques. Bring your imagination,
project ideas and sampes (if you have them) for a day of hands-on fun!

#25 FRAMING CARPENTRY
Instructor: Caly Benvenutto
You learn framing carpentry from a master builder by constructing a
small multipurpose wood-frame structure (tool shed, play house, art
studio) using full dimension lumber, including floor, wall, and roof
framing and sheathing. Covers terminology, tools, and techniques of
framing; hands-on experience in lay-out, measuring, cutting and
assembly.

#26 ELECTRICAL WIRING
Instructor: Cheri Cochran
Through demonstrations and by working on mock-ups, you learn how to
install standard residential electrical service, run circuits, wire
switches and outlets, attach fixtures, and plan a residential wiring
system. Offered at a San Francisco site.

#27 PLUMBING
Instructor: Peter Langes
You'll learn the basics of plumbing installation and repair in this
class taught by a professional plumber. You'll practice cutting and
joining pipe, drilling pathways, threading pipe, strapping pipe, and
installing fixtures. DWV pipes, supply pipes, and fixtures are
installed in a mock-up bathroom.

#29 FINISH CARPENTRY
Instructor: Kevin Stamm
Covers the fundamentals: hanging
a door, measuring and fitting the casing, installing a simple
wainscoting with panels, battens, baseboard, and chair rail. Learn how
to use mitred joints, coping and scribing. Coping for crown molding,
tricks for solving trim and other problems will be demonstrated. Work
on full size mock-up walls and use both power and hand tools. Minimum of 4, maximum
of eight students.

#30 DECK BUILDING
Instructor: Mike Zinser
Participants will learn the safe use of hand and power tools and the
fundamentals of deck construction: installing posts, girders, ledgers,
joists and decking. Discussions cover design, railings, type of wood
and hardware, and, if time allows, stairs. An excellent introduction to
basic carpentry skills (weather permitting).

#31 CERAMIC TILE
Instructor: Rod Taylor
This two-day workshop teaches you how to install ceramic tile yourself.
Topics covered: layout, mortar bed, adhesives, grouts and tile types,
and typical tile applications- countertops, floors, bathtub surrounds
and shower stalls. You'll learn by working on full scale mock-ups.

#32 KITCHEN CABINET & COUNTER
INSTALLATION
Instructor: Glen Kitzenberger
Get the finished look and the low cost you want by installing new
modular cabinets and countertops yourself. In a morning lecture and
afternoon demonstration, learn how to select cabinets for quality and
price and the professional way to level, plumb and assemble modular
units and preformed counters.

#33 STUCCO REPAIR
Instructor: Rick Rutherford
Learn to patch and repair stucco yourself on a full-scale mock-up.
We'll cover demolition, waterproofing, reinforcing, mixing and
application of material, coloring and painting. Techniques for new
construction will also be discussed.

#34 PATHS AND PATIOS - STONE WORK
Instructors: Ted Kugelman
Identify basic rules that lead to a visually pleasing and long lasting job.
We'll then lay a simple, beautiful flagstone path, patio and/or porch on a
crushed rock base at a job site location. Opportunity to cut large
stones into smaller pieces and lay out a section

#35 FAUX FINISH: SURFACE
TRANSFORMATIONS
Instructor: Caroline Stern
This class covers color and simple techniques of some faux finishes,
glazing, ragging, sponging and marbleizing. In the morning, you'll
learn how to use color and try some small-scale hands-on techniques. In
the afternoon, you'll experiment with wall finishes. Bring a small
object primed to paint: planter box, picture frame, table, stool, etc.

#36 HARDWOOD FLOOR REFINISHING
Instructor: Tim Margetts
Want to save money by refinishing your old hardwood floors yourself? Be
prepared to get dusty. This class is taught by a master floor refinishing
contractor at a jobsite, possibly in Mountain View.

#37 INTERIOR PLASTERING
Instructor: Jim Servais
You're limited only by your imagination when it comes to interior
plaster work. The morning session covers application methods, trade
practices, styles, coloring, textures, tools, and contract-related
questions. In the afternoon we'll go to the workshop for hands-on
mixing and application of plaster in a variety of textures.

#39 WINDOW AND SASH REHABILITATION
Instructor: David Clark
If you're a preservationist, love your old "wavy" glass, want to be
"green" and so not want to replace your sashes with cheap vinyl or
expensive replacement windows, restore your period house wood
window sashes and frames using marine epoxy techniques. Rerope
double-hung windows and weatherstrip casement/dh windows for
energy savings and comfort.

Instructor: David Weir
A comprehensive introduction to the lowest cost and easiest-to-use architecture
computer modeling program. SketchUp is now the leading medium for architectural
perspective renderings and presentation drawings. Software cam be downloaded
at no cost. Bring your own laptop (required)..

#40 PORTABLE POWER TOOLS FOR
BEGINNERS
Instructor: Donna Mori
Demonstrations and hands-on practice in safe use of portable power tools
including a drill, sander, circular saw, jig saw and router. A bookshelf
will be built by each student (fee includes materials).

#28 DRYWALL HANGING AND FINISHING
Instructor: Glen Kitzenberger
A professional drywaller/teacher demonstrates time-saving techniques for one of
the most common and challenging construction jobs. Learn to measure,
cut and fasten wallboard, fit it around electrical outlets and install
corner bead and trim. Use ready-mix joint compound to tape joints and
spot nails. Covers topping and skimming of joints and corner bead, and
the proper use of "hot mud". Be introduced to skip-trowel and
spatter/ knockdown texturing techniques.

#22 ARCHITECTURAL MODEL MAKING
Instructor: David Friend
Visualize your design in 3-D before you build or remodel. Models are
terrific tools to discover how your plan will look and feel when built.
We'll discuss various types of model making techniques to help you solve
different design issues: floor plan layout, lighting, siting, materials,
and structure. We'll begin making a model of your project if you have
the plans.

#58 ARCHITECTURAL SKETCHING
Instructor: Jon Larson
Wouldn't it be great to be able to sketch that breakfast nook you saw
and liked... or an idea you have for your addition? We'll cover quick
visualization techniques, rendering tips for buildings and their natural
surroundings, free-hand perspective, composition and design, simple line
drawings and tonal drawings. Students who are familiar with perspective
tend to get the most out of the class.
